That's what pro's do....

So... there I wuz.....

Shepherding my class into lab for a nice session with the 9 inchers, just to break them in gently on differential assemblies.

But, what did we find there?  In only minutes, as students were pre-lab inspecting their training aids, group after group came to me.  "Mr. Welling... these things are a mess!"

Yes, the previous class had left us a real mess alright, and never said a word of warning.  Training units falling apart, locked up, not assembled correctly..... many totally unusable for the assigned lab..

Now yes, this grated on me quite significantly, but I firmly believe that obstacles come with opportunities.  I saw one here, and grabbed it by the throat.

"Okay youngens, what do you think of this situation?"

The class, almost as a chorus, "It Sucks Ba...... "

"Whoa there Tigers... mind your phraseology... and I agree with you.  CHILDREN leave messes like this for other people to clean up, not adults, and certainly not professionals.  Now, here's what we are gonna do....."

I had each group detail inspect their training aid, as I went from group to group explaining how to fix their own personal mess left by the other class.  In many cases, I showed them the techniques for assembling and adjusting the units as we went.

My class *fixed* their training aids, *then* tore them down and proceeded with their own labs to learn how the units worked, how to measure them, and how to properly assemble them.

We left every single training aid in perfect condition when we were done, as a point of pride.

That's what professionals do; They do their job, and they do it right.

  1. Is differential repair even a real thing? I mean I've been driving for 50 years in all kinds of cars and I've had all kinds of mechanical problems, but never had a problem with a final drive assembly. I have heard of trucks having these problems but still not very common.
