WTF?

My seated rapid fire target....

As my targets go, this one is a bit sucky. On the other hand, it was my second entire match of the afternoon and I could feel my focus slipping away fast in the heat of the sun.

That's not the issue. I'm pointing at that tiny little five shot group, right there under the bull. Not that fact that I missed the bull.... I know what happened there, and it's not a problem. It's just the first time I fired this rifle, with that ammo, in that position, with a sling. I shot this particular match just to get a feel for shooting an AR under those conditions for the first time. Up till then, I'd only fired that AR from the bench.

The point is... How the Bleeping Bleep did I shoot a five shot one inch group right smack in the middle of a ten shot 'pattern'? I am pretty sure I know exactly which five they were. It happened at a moment in time when the entire universe came into focus, and the sights settled into frozen steadiness, and every perfect breath was followed by a perfect trigger squeeze.

Five rounds out of 100 fired for score.

Anyway, I shot a 396/500 3x with the old Turk Mauser, and a 391/500 2x with the AR.

Not a bad match for me, and I am certain the Appleseed training of last month really helped.

That's a nice group.

Were you sighted for POA=POI and started using a 6 o'clock hold?

Were you running your magazines 5rds each? Did something change when you reloaded?

Is it a free float handguard?

Did you change sling tension during the string?

I'm just throwing out ideas. I'd say you definitely need to look at making an elevation adjustment.

Actually, I wasn't sighted at all, nor have I ever shot the rifle except from the bench, nor I have I used that ammo in that rifle before. I just shot it in the match to get a feel for shooting thus.

2 and 8, high power rules. Certainly something changed when I reloaded, and under rapid fire I didn't have time to re-establish NPOA. Still, this group was shot after the reload.

Nope. A magpul set on a standard A2 setup.

*Did you change sling tension during the string?

I tried not to.

Oh yes... sighting in needs to be done, with whatever load I settle on. This was just some PPU I grabbed in case I could shoot second squad.
