So, this morning...
I was on the bat-phone this morning while I was driving in to work. We have new
hours, and I was asking a question about scheduling my employees.
I
was told to have my people show up at 7:15, and if customers were there
they could clock in and take care of the customers. If there are no
customers, they are to hang around and then clock in at 7:30.
Um.... what? Are you serious?
My first thought was: "That is illegal, and just plain wrong".
My second thought was: "I am the general manager for that site. If I do this, my fat ass is on the hook".
I gave my notice 30 seconds later.
Eventually they will find someone to replace me. I might be done tomorrow, or it might be two months from now. In either case, I think I will take some time off to relax and remember how to smile. Then..... on to the next adventure!

Welcome to the ranks of the happily un-employed! Enjoy your vacation!
Not yet unemployed, but will be eventually. 'Vacation' is pretty much exactly what I am thinking, although it will mostly be 'Stay-cation' to conserve funds.
Good on ya! Having the testicular capacity to stick to your guns like that is rare; even though leaving it open-ended like that is too good for them. Give them two weeks and see if they are stupider than they sound...
Berst of luck. I hope that the next opportunity involves fewer assholes. Or that your "Pretirement" is enjoyable and worry free.
Gah, yeah, that is patently illegal... Good move on your part!
I think I'd have requested that that order be put in writing, then raised an objection.
You never know, at that time of morning you may just have been sent a juicy piece of evidence to take to an industrial tribunal (or whatever your equivalent is?) at a later date.
I sent a 'Memorandum of Understanding' on it. Anyone who's been involved with administration and/or bureaucracy knows what that is.
"As I understand our conversation this morning, you instructed me to.....
If I am incorrect in my understanding please let me know"
An unethical organization will screw you as fast as they will screw the other guy. Also, you are right about who will have the fingers pointing at him.
When I explained to my higher ups in a company I used to work for that an agreement between two people does not negate federal law as regards overtime wages, they determined that I was a troublemaker(true enough)and politely, but firmly showed me the door.
I am certain that your cat like reflexed will land you on your feet.
Yup time to look for other employment. When a security company I used to work for tried to schedule me to work 24 hours straight, I told them "Bye" and walked out.
