I believe this essay carries interesting comparisons to current events. It goes into fair detail on the use by, and fear of, satire when totalitarian regimes come into contact with it.
We currently have a highly successful political and social satire outlet that is coming head to head with a regime (not in total power at this time). I suspect there will be value in checking off the historical bingo squares as we observe how this regime handles itself when confronted with deeply striking humor based on their actions.
Given that most all political humor is one sided these days, and acknowledging that a political figure can easily become a caricature of them-self, the power of humor in our current political climate seems out of proportion, historically.
Worth watching, and I expect many books will be written on this topic in the not so distant future.
