Range day

Range day with friend Dave and Herself's daughter.  Shooting the new loads in the High Wall, and a score of other toys.

Firstus, girl child is a freaking NATURAL.  She nailed safety discipline cold, and never had to be shown anything twice.   AR, single action Ruger, double action Smith, Glock with an optical, Lever action carbine.... no matter.  If she watched us once, was shown once, she went at it like it was her 999th time.

She pronounced the .38 S&W to be "Yummy", and wanted to know what future plans Dave had for it.   Cheek!   She even popped a few rounds from the High Wall 45-70.  That one, she said had a bit more... OOMPH.

As for my loads, they did fine for first time out with cast bullets in this rifle.  The 300 grain over 3031 rounds all printed within my palm at 50 yards. Not spectacular, but a good start and consistent too.

The 405 grain bullets over 13 grains of Red Dot.... damn!  Like shooting an overeager rimfire, and groups shrank.

After I adjusted sights, my next two shots almost touched each other.  Cool says I.  Hey Dave, want to try this?  These are a hoot!

His two rounds DID touch each other.  Show off.

Lessons learned:
1) This rifle *wants* to shoot well.  Load development will be enjoyable.  Black powder, once I find some, may be more challenging, but like I said.... it wants to shoot well.

2) The buckhorn sight on this beastie is a challenge of it's own.  The rifle deserves better for what I want to do with it.  Either a Marble tang sight, or a full blown Vernier tang sight if I can find one.

3)  Bring more ammo.  It goes ever so fast while having that much fun.

4)  Teach that kid to reload.  She goes through .38 and 5.56 like it was Pez candy.
