Booze and taxes.... but I repeat myself.

Our nation was founded by a bunch of soused people who distilled their own booze from all the grain their hard work provided. 'Home Distilling' is as 'Murican as it gets.

So, of course, the Gubermint had to tax the bejeebers out of home made booze. The tax was to pay for a war, naturally.... but hey, why kill off a good money making scheme?

Because it's a Gubermint tax, it comes at the muzzle of a gun. In fact, a whole entire Gubermint agency chock full of people just giggling at the thought of shooting your ass for failing to hand over your hard earned moola. It's flat out armed robbery, only with a badge and a license to murder.

Taxing all the small time farmers making booze got tiresome, so they passed a law. The law says they will kill you if you make your own booze, because it's too hard to steal your money when it's all spread out like that. They want to centralize the booze, to make it easy to steal money from those who enjoy it. It's as if Jesse James forced the townies to put their money in the bank, so he only had to rob one place instead of all the places.

Later on, when some uppity idjits in Gubermint wandered off the rails and outlawed fun (IE: Booze), three things happened.  One,  a whole lot of 'Muricans said F.U. in no uncertain way. Two, an entire genre of criminal enterprise grew and expanded to fill the  gap (Look up that old pirate Joe Kennedy, and how his family made it's fortune). Three, the real movers and shakers in Gubermint said "Holy Fargballs!  Those Idjit's are killing off our phoney baloney scheme to steal money from those peasants!"  (True story, reported on TV at the time, according to Uncle 'Creepyhands' Joe).   They repealed the laws that were cutting into their take, mostly.  Here in PA though, the Ticks in charge of the Poli kept some of those in place, mostly to double their dipping into our pockets.  All at gunpoint, of course.

Yeah, that hasn't stopped me from thinking of distilling my own hooch. I'm 'Murican after all, not some quisling twit begging to be abused by 'lawful' terrorists.

Nope... what stops me is this: I can't make a decent spirit for less than I can buy it in the store 5 miles from my house, nor can I possibly match the quality of what they stock there.

Any given day of the week, I can walk into the store and select from THOUSANDS of choices, almost all good, and many downright astonishingly good.

Not only can't I make it cheaper, but I'll also never be able to match the millennia of collective experience those master brewers bring to the table.

You see, I take part in that other 'Murican past time, called 'The Free Market'.

Yeah, they tax the crap out of that too. Why not? it's so much easier to steal from people than it is to work for it yourself... as long as you have that license and badge.
