I just got the highest home electric bill of my life. Yes, this will be a problem in our budget... if we can still call it a budget.
Mea Culpa, I am a big part of that. I've run the AC units hard this summer as it makes breathing easier for me. On top of that are all the usual suspects. Laundry, dishes, cooking, lights, the O2 concentrator the doc insists on, etc. Over all our usage popped by almost 50% over last year, even with giving up the hot tub. That is not sustainable. That MUST go down, no matter what.
Rates in our area went up 10% at the end of last year, and another 16% this June. Overall, we've seen a 48% increase in rates since the end of 2020.
Usage across the entire PJM grid (13 states plus The Swamp) has gone up over 8% in the last five years. During that same time, generation capacity has risen just 0.5 %. Supply and demand are at work here, along with some really hinky political crap. Our Guv (Shapiro) says "Yeah, but it would be costing EVEN MORE if it wasn't for me!" as he pats himself on the back on social media.
There is no relief in sight, no matter how much the Poly-Tick-ions blather on. All we can do is adapt and overcome.
