I think people are quite tunnel vision on 'Flying Car'. Allow me to explain what I thought when I saw it.
Remove the driveline. Batteries, motors, wheels, suspension, steering... every last component. Beef up the body and wrap it around the bottom. Enough to survive ballistic impacts.
Expand the hyper-compressed air storage a LOT. Double the # of attitude and propulsion nozzles.
Add in a few manipulator arms and a vacuum welding arm. Add hard points to attach cargo and components. Install a smart computer to aid the pilot.
What do we have? The construction sled that will power all near-earth engineering projects for decades to come.
