I wondered if it was a black racer also. Have you seen him before. I read that black racers are territorial and chase people out of their territory, thus one of the reasons they get their name.
We have many black snakes around here, although I don't know if they are 'black racers' or not. I always just called them 'black snakes' till they get really large, then they are called 'Rat snakes' around here.
In any case, I co-exist with them nicely. I'm quite content to have them eating all the mice they can find. I even leave the basement mostly to them...
