Grasshopper, you are not ready....

I have a tech who wishes to step foot on the management track.  I tried this with him before, and found failings that pushed him back.

This time.... I told him:

"Grasshopper, if you wish to begin on that path, you must first tell me the most important secret of management".

To date, he has failed.

The answer......... ?

Depends... :-) Honestly, I'd say leading by example.

Leading be example is certainly very, very important.

But then... that calls for being there all the time.

I'm always suspicious of people who WANT to be in management, especially in our field.

You manage issues, you lead people.

Confusing the two results in many problems.

What I was shooting for with this individual was.... "Manage things so well that no management is needed".

But.... I like 3boxesofbs's take as well. With this guy, that would suit to. He thinks 'management' is being bossy and needlessly cruel. He cleans misses the leadership part, and the knowledge part, and the thoughtfulness part, and the part where I refrain from smacking him in the head.

Funny - most managers I worked for in 30+ years considered "CYA" to be the most important.

None of the good ones, though...
(I just retired, so now I have time to comment on blogs...)
