Buy books, collect files

I agree with this idea, and for exactly the reason it was expressed.  But, I'd narrow it down a bit.

Yes!  Buy books! New ones, old ones, ones you hope to read and ones you hope to never read. Buy books you would be proud to have people see in your living room... and buy books you hope to leave in boxes in the attic forever.

Buy books that make you relax, and buy books that keep you up at night.  Have books on your shelf to remind you of all that's good in the world, and also all that's evil.

Buy books that support all your best dreams.

Buy books that might help you survive your worst nightmares.

Buy books like you are assembling the library that might kick-start a post-apocalyptic society.

Buy books that would make the Dalai Lama smile.

Then, and at the same time, download every digital book you can. Every book that's free.  Every book that would make a Stasi agent concerned. Every book that a TV evangelist or race baiting scammer would cast you out for owning.

Why?  Just on the off chance there are people who don't want you to. All the other good reasons are icing on the cake.

What is the worst that could happen?  You have a lovely library of your own.

To those who say "You could get in trouble for owning the wrong books", my answer is simple.  If we are living in a time where owning a book is a real risk, then we REALLY need to own that book, and forcefully protect the right own any book we wish.
