Why? Because the writing style annoyed me. Worst of all, upon reflection as to why, I realize I do the same thing.
Unless there is a good reason, like a point to make, writers should not force a readers thoughts to stop or even pause.
Two examples:
1) 'Her name is Helen'.
2) 'Helen. That is her name'.
Punctuation and sentence structure control the flow of what the reader is thinking. A comma slows, and a period ends the thought.
In the first example a simple idea is conveyed. Everything necessary for the thought is contained in those four words. It tells us the name of a character in the story. End of thought.
In the second example we have a name followed by a period. That's a full stop. Then start up again to explain 'her' name is Helen with another full stop. Say that in your head. Feel the thought start, stop, start again, and stop again.
Why? Why did that writer choose to make my thought process bounce like a yo yo, when he could have moved it smoothly along while shaping it with his words? Are there people who enjoy that writing style?
Most important of all, why do *I* write like that?
Head, apply velocity, meet desk.
