To avoid "M1 Thumb" have someone show you how to close the bolt without getting your thumb pinched.
You have to push down on the clip a little with your thumb to release the bolt while you block the bolt handle with the heel of your hand. If done right it should kick your hand and thumb clear as the bolt goes forward.

I think I have everything I need now to shoot the Garand in an upcoming match... except for having never shot the rifle of course.

WV - "carimp" - if you reload for your Garand, make sure you put a good carimp on the rounds.
